The author gives an overview of the legal status and the distribution of the Adder (Vipera berus) in Flanders. Although this snake is protected by law, it still is one of Flanders’ most endangered reptiles. Currently, its range is very likely limited to only two isolated populations (one big and one rather small) in the Antwerp Campine area. The main reasons are the extreme fragmentation, the destruction and the degradation of its natural habitat: heathland. To preserve and if possible enlarge the remaining populations, it’s absolutely necessary to protect its habitat (e.g. by acquisition) and by managing these areas according to the specific needs of the viper.
