Water frogs are complex This article provides an overview of the complex genetics and determination of water frogs. Only since 1976 it is known that there are three taxa of water frog instead of one taxon in the Netherlands. Determination of water frogs is complex. Therefore useful information is given on colouration, body proportions, measurements and sounds. With these characteristics it is possible to obtain a quite high degree of certainty, however only blood analyses will give absolute certainty. It is stated that determination to species level can be useful from a conservation point of view, but should be done with utmost care.
