Potential measurements between minerals (especially Pyrite) and their surrounding rocks gave values of about 0.5 Volt. It is concluded that the mineral and its bedrock under certain conditions may form a galvanic pair. In the case of Pyrite a protecting mantle of Hydrogen ions may form, shielding the mineral from oxydation. These observations may explain why, while in most cases Pyrite readily decomposes. Under wet conditions, in some cases the mineral remains completely fresh.
