In the heath between Blaricum, Huizen and Bussum (het Gooi, province of Noord-Holland, the Netherlands) are some old pits, where farmers long ago mined loam and loamy sand. In these pits a grassy vegetation, rich in species and unique for the Netherlands, has developed. Due to severe recreational pressure there is now much erosion and an extensive degradation of the vegetation. The author stresses the need for better protection and well-planned management.
