The presence of remains of Tortella flavovirens in a lake deposit of Bolling age (ca, 12,200 years B.P.) corroborates the idea that landscape, soils and vegetation in sandy areas in N.W.-Europe had certain characteristics in common with the present calcareous coastal sand dunes in Denmark, The Netherlands and Belgium.
