Wijsman & de Jong (1985) have divided the species formerly referred to as Petunia s.l. and proposed that the two groups formed should be distinguished at the generic level. From the generic names available an appropriate choice has been made. However, as a consequence the common garden petunia had to receive a new name. Therefore, Wijnands et al. (1986) have proposed that the generic name Petunia should have as its conserved type species Petunia nyctaginiflora Jussieu, for which the valid name is Petunia axillaris (Lam.) B.S.P.; this would avoid a change in the name for an important crop plant. This proposal has meanwhile been accepted (Brummitt 1989). However, the other newly distinguished genus, for which Petunia is no longer available, is now in need of a new name. As has been reported by Wijsman & de Jong (1985), Calibrachoa Llave & Lex. would be the name to be applied. In the present communication new combinations under Calibrachoa are proposed for the species mentioned by Wijsman & de Jong (1985) as far as is known from personal inspection (specimens have been listed previously; those in ‘herbarium Wijsman’ have by now been incorporated into U). In addition, the following species have been included: P. linoides, P. regnellii, P. hassleriana, P. caesia, because their latest reviewer, Fries (1911), as well as Smith & Downs (1964) consider them to be very closely related, possibly synonymous. This would leave several names for species considered to belong to Calibrachoa, but these are not known from personal inspection and may be best left for the next reviewer to assign them definitely. The relevant taxa as cited from Fries (1911) are: P. thymifolia, P. humilis, P. micrantha, P. helianthemoides, P. pubescens, P. ledifolia, P. dusenii, P. sendtneriana; further taxa, described by Smith & Downs (1964), are: P. serrulata, P. spathulata, P. alpicola, P. kleinii. The new combinations are the following: Calibrachoa Llave & Lex., Nov. Veg. Descr. 2(1825)3. Type species: C. procumbens Llave & Lex., l.c. ( = Petunia parviflora Jussieu, Ann. Mus. Hist.
