For inventarisations of amphibians, often a salamander fyke is used. Research has shown that this type of sampling also provides a good method to sample for large predacious water beetles. In 2005 the heavily protected water beetle Dytiscus latissimus was rediscovered in the Netherlands after almost forty years. This rare water beetle can be identified by its size and the greatly enlarged edges of its wing shield. An observation of Dytiscus latissimus can be reported to eis-Nederland.
