The third article in this series gives a systematic description of the Radiolaria; this group of protozoans is very rich in species (almost 60001), all restricted to the marine environment, often with a pelagic way of living. Their skeletons (mostly siliceous) are preserved in widely different marine sediments; high percentages are found in certain deep sea sediments (radiolaria ooze). Radiolaria are among the oldest organisms on earth; their value as age indicator is poor. Finds of Radiolaria in the Netherlands are mentioned; a special place have the erratics found in the Netherlands, derived from Paleozoic outcrops in Germany and Sweden.
