An introduction is given to the study of thin sections. The attention is drawn to use the polarisation-microscope at first without nicols. Treated are: opaque and transparent minerals, color, shape of cristals, cleavage, refraction, the Becke line and pleochroism. Attention is called for the systematism of nature, that groups together associations of minerals in the various types of rocks.
