During field investigations in the basal Eocene east of Enschede in the eastern part of the Netherlands traces of volcanic ash (characterized by slaggish or spherical particles of a blackish glassy substance with a diameter of about 0.1 millimeter) have been found in a few borings. Due to the absence of microfauna a precise age determination could not be established but they definitely date from the Eocene. The ash originates from the Eocene volcanic eruptions in the present day Skagerrak.
