In this article some of the author's views and observations on the biostratigraphy of sediments of Lower Campanian (Vaals Formation) and lowermost Upper Campanian age (Zeven Wegen Chalk) are put forward. Particularly valuable for biostratigraphical purposes are the following belemnites: Belemnetella ex. gr. praecursor, Gonioteuthis quadrata quadrata, and Belemnitella mucronata, which occur abundantly in the sediments exposed in the CPL quarry at Hallembaye. Equally well suited for correlation with sediments from other parts of NW-Europe are the echinoids Cardiotaxis heberti and Galeola papillosa aff. basiplana. The glauconite-bearing layer at the base of the Zeven Wegen Chalk, situated immediately above the Zeven Wegen Horizon, is thought to be of lower Upper Campanian age by the author on the basis of the absence of Gonioteuthis quadrata as autochthonous fauna-element and the characteristic echinoid-association.
