Tektieten

Tektites are, with a few exceptions, small objects of natural glass found in strewnfields. In the last 150 years several explanations of their origin were given, a.o. volcanic action on earth or on the moon, a special kind of meteorites, impact of large meteorites on earth or on the moon,manmade and several other rather speculative theories. By a range of detailed analyses of the components of tektites and impactglasses, and their correlations, the nearly general opinion has grown that meteoritic impacts in sedimentary soils were the origin of nearly all tektites. Several strewnfields, some characteristics of tektites and their age are discussed.
