Erratic boulders, mainly of northern European origin, occur in the northern part of The Netherlands. However, erratic boulders are also found in the southern part of the country. It concerns gravel and boulders from the Eifel en the Ardennen, which are deposited during the Quarternary in course-grained fluviatile deposits of the rivers Rhine and Meuse. The smaller sizes are transported as bedload in the riverchannels. The transport of the larger boulders is thought to take place when they are picked up in icefloes after period of frost in wich the rivers are completely frozen into the channelbottoms. This process may take place as well as in glacials as in interglacial periods.
