An older finding (1956/1957) of barytes (barite) collected from Westfalian strata at the former Hendrik colliery at Brunssum (Limburg, The Netherlands) is described. Barytes is a rare constituent of mineral assemblages known from Dutch collieries. Specimens studied are developed as radially arranged aggregates, with a few euhedric crystals in some cavities and delimited by convex faces. Chemical analyses have revealed that dark brown parts have higher Fe content than the light grey ones. The presence of Sr has not been demonstrated, which is a typical feature of recrystallised barytes. This type has often been described by authors as light grey, powdery barytes. Part of the Brunssum barytes shows this loose, powdery structure.
