The railway sandpit in the ice - pushed ridge near Maarn is the oldest 'dry' sandpit in The Netherlands still in use. Publications concerning the geology of thepit are scarce, in spite of its more than 150 years' existence. This applies especially for the ice - pushed deposits. This article has in view to fill this gap, just before termination of the exploitation in 2000. The thrusted sequence consists of mainly meandering - fluvial Lower Pleistocene sands and clays, braidedfluvial late Middle Pleistocene (presumably Saalian) sands and gravels, and Saalian sandur and glacial - lake deposits. Three successive east to northeast dipping thrusts have thicknesses of about 37, 23 and 19 m.
