The name, paleogeography and evolution of Alachterium, the Pliocene walrus of the North Sea, are discussed. So are Miocene walrus reports, which all seem to be based on erroneous identified large Miocene seals or Late Pliocene walrus. Guided by fossil records and the morphology of the extant Odobenus rosmarus a reconstruction of Alachtherium cretsii is made.
