Mineralogy and petrological properties of the Udelfangen sandstone (Lower Muschelkalk, Germany) have been studied in detail. The sandstone is dominated by fine grained quartz, lithic fragments ans mica's (mainly muscovite) cemented by carbonate. Porosity is high (17 - 27 vol.%) and permeability is good (0.75 - 376 milli-Darcy). The Udelfangen sandstone has been used as a restoration stone in the Netherlands from the second half of the 19th century. Due to the use of different qualities of the stone, such as, layers of rich in loam and layers with high mica and carbonate content, its weathering behaviour is different in each application. The most durable stones are expected to last about two hundred years in the outdoor climate.
