In the Haaksbergerveen, an area in the Dutch province Overijssel near the German border, the Weatherfish (Misgurnus fossilis) is known to be present since 70 years. The Weatherfish appears to thrive under the extreme conditions in the acid ponds in this peatmoor. In 1999 hundreds of spawning Weatherfishes were seen. In this article, distribution, water quality of the ponds where the spawning taak place and the factors that influence this mass spawning are discussed. The spawning waters can be characterised as nutrient poor to moderate nutrient rich waters, low in oxygen and influenced by seepage. The waters also have a rich vegetation. The mass spawning that took place on 24th and 2Sth of April 1999came after a sudden rise in temperature within a few days.
