After a review of the morphology and way of life of ahermatypical corals the author gives short descriptions of the species found in the derived shellmaterial from the river Westerscheldt in the south-west of Holland. The age of this material is supposed to he mainly pliocense. The following species are discussed: Sphenotrochus milletianus (Defrance), Sphenotrochus boytonensis Tomes, Culicia parasitica (Michelin), Flabellum cf michelini Milne Edwards & Haime, Plahellum cf siciliense Milne Edwards & Haime, Turhinolia nysti Milne Edwards & Haime (age Eocene). It is curious that the species Balanophyllia caliculus Wood, which is common in the English Crag, does not occur in the pliocene of Holland and Belgium.
