The lithology, sedimentary structures and (sub)fossil molluscan content of Subatlantic (Holocene) barrier deposits in the western Netherlands and the modern Dutch shoreface are compared. The taphonomy and depth distribution of common Recent North Sea fauna is shown to be distinctive in the interpretation of fossil sections. 14C methodology is discussed in an appendix.
