53 fossil remains of land mammals dating from the Early Pleistocene (circa 2 million years ago) have been trawled up from the Eastern Scheld estuary during the 46th palaeontological expedition of the Kor en Bot Society on 31 August 1996. Unique catches are: an ulna of Crocuta perrieri and a proximal radius fragment of the rhinoceros Stephanorhinus cf. etruscus.
