The origin of the study of the Hystricidae by the author is indicated. A review is given of the distribution, morphology and biology of the three recent genera of the family. The evolutionary development of the skull and the molar morphology are discussed. Some comments are given on the known fossil representatives. The origin of the family lies before the Late Miocene, and the relationship with other rodent families is uncertain.
