The pinnate specimens of Sphacelaria, found along the coast of the Netherlands, have been recorded incorrectly as Chaetopteris plumosa (Lyngbye) Kutzing. They belong to Sphacelaria plumigera Holmes or S. plumula Zanardini. S. plumigera is not uncommon in the province of Zeeland. The plurilocular zoidangia of this species are described here for the first time. S. plumula has been found once in the Netherlands. It was found washed ashore near Huisduinen (prov. N.-Holland) on a stone with Himanthalia elongata.
