Cosmarium pokornyanum is principally known from arctic and alpine regions in Europe and North America. In June, 2001, it was found for the first time in the Netherlands. Its occurrence in this temperate lowland region may be associated with its ecology, i.e., a sub-atmophytic way of life on pH-neutral to alkaline substrates.
