While re-examining Potamogeton specimens in the collection of the Milieu Educatie Centrum (Environmental Education Centre) in Eindhoven (Province of Noord-Brabant), a specimen was renamed as Potamogeton ×schreberi G.Fisch., which had not previously been recorded in the Netherlands. The nothospecies is new for the Netherlands and rare in Europe. The collection was made in 2005, when three plants were found growing in a recently enlarged railway ditch north of ’s-Hertogenbosch (Province of Noord-Brabant) in the former river plain of the River Meuse. In spite of searches in subsequent years, such plants plants have not been found again. A unique combination of morphological characters states distinguishes Potamogeton ×schreberi from both parents: the presence of phyllodes, transition leaves, and floating leaves. Potamogeton ×schreberi differs from the very similar P. ×fluitans by the length of the petioles of its upper submerged leaves, the thickened but not winged nerves on the stipules, and a few stem anatomical features. i.e. the trio-type vascular bundle, the U- to O-shaped endodermis cells, and the absence of a pseudo-hypodermis.
