The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is discussed as a possible model for the origin of life. Innumerable cycles of abiotic DNA replication, involving recurrent mutations at a rate of 1 : 2.104 could have led to an enormously varied population of DNAs. Competition among these DNAs for efficient replication could have resulted in selection and eventually in co-evolution of DNAs and proteins which is a prerequisite for the origin of life.
