We performed an inventory of the spider and harvestmen fauna of the river foreland Millingerwaard; a nature restoration area where agricultural practices were abandoned since 1990. Sampling was carried out using 60 pitfall traps, which were distributed over 12 vegetation types and operational from 23 March until 15 July 2004. In total, 68 spider species and 8 harvestmen species were found. Distribution of the species over the vegetation types is presented and broad patterns in their occurrence are discussed. Three rare and characteristic riparian species were present: Pardosa argicola, Arctosa cinerea and Astrobunus laevipes. Compared to other studies in the Netherlands, 32 spider species – or 46% of the total species list – can be classified as typical or indicator species associated with river forelands. To obtain a more complete inventory of spider and harvestmen diverisity in the nature restoration area, additional sight observations and sweep net sampling are necessary, since pitfall traps are not efficient for collecting all species.
