A case of unintentional import of Macrothele calpeiana in Utrecht in the Netherlands is reported. Despite the protected status of this small but very beautiful mygalomorph spider species through the Bern Convention and the Habitats Directive, the specimen was killed by treating the ornamental olive tree with an insecticide. Earlier records of import in the Netherlands suggest olive trees from southern Spain as vehicle for its dispersal.
