Onbedoelde prooioverdracht tussen Sperwer Accipiter nisus en Boomvalk Falco subbuteo

On 21 June 2001, an adult male Hobby sat in attention near its nest (50 m away) in a poplar. From there, he attacked a prey-carrying adult female Sparrowhawk head-on in level flight. The Sparrowhawk turned upside down in defense, upon which the Hobby grabbed the starling Stumus vulgaris from her talons and disappeared into the woodlot where its female was incubating. Apparently, the Sparrowhawk also had a nest in the same woodlot (but not found), considering another food transportation earlier that day. In this region in the central Netherlands, nesting sites are in short supply (mainly farmland, with small woodlots), increasing the risk of kleptoparasitism.
