De Havik Accipiter gentilis als serial killer

An occupied Northern Goshawk nest near Almere in Flevoland was visited several times in 2001 and 2002, during which a total of nine Eurasian Kestrel Falco tinnunculus rings were recovered (Table 1). The Belgian Kestrel was ringed as a nestling on 10 June 2001, and recovered only 28 days later some 151 km to the north as Goshawk prey. Six depredated juvenile Kestrels originated from two nests near the Goshawk eyrie, where respectively 6 and 4 nestlings had been ringed in 2001. However, the recapture of an adult male Kestrel on 21 December 2002, carrying ring number 3567055, proved that not all nestlings from the above-mentioned Kestrel nests had been killed by the Goshawk.
