From 2001 onwards Common Cranes are breeding in the Fochteloerveen and direct surroundings. The Fochteloerveen is a unique peat moor relic of 2.000 ha in the northwest of the Province of Drenthe. The number of pairs grew, after the establishment of the first pairin 2001, to two pairs in 2002 and did not further increase (Table 1). Initially clutches were small (1 egg), but later clutches with two eggs more frequently appeared and in 2005 both pairs produced two eggs and raised two young.
