Up to 500 Great Shearwaters were attracted by the fisheries research vessel Tridens in the northern part of the Bay of Biscay, early November 1993 (figure 1), while the ship was on station for hydrographic observations. Great Shearwaters were absent or very scarce in the Celtic Sea during the rest of the survey. Great Shearwaters are well known as scavengers at trawlers in this part of the Atlantic, but most birds have usually left the area by October. Most of 29 small fish (Poor Cod, argentines, Scad) thrown towards the assembled birds were swallowed, some spiny fish (Dory, Boar-fish) and three small squid were ignored.
