Naamgeving van sprinkhanen

While finishing a book on the crickets and grasshoppers of The Netherlands, we were confronted with some nomenclatural problems. The first deals with the correct name for the Westem-European subspecies of Ephippiger ephippiger. Kruseman (1988) has rejected the long standing use of vitium Serville, 1831, on the basis of Article 72e of the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature (3rd edition, 1985), cited above. He regarded the description by Serville as a replacement name for ephippiger Fabricius, 1793. In that case the type locality will become that of the replaced name, hence Vienna, and the name can no longer be used for the Paris populations. However, our opinion is that the description of vitium cannot be regarded as a replacement name, which was expressly proposed as such, as article 72e requires. Further, Serville has later in 1839 described vitium again in detail on the basis of French material. For reasons of stability we therefore propose to continue the use of vitium and no longer use the junior synonym diurnus. In the second part of the paper we propose a few new vernacular names in Dutch for some species which will be treated in our book.
