In Flanders extra attention is being given to the Alcon Blue (Maculinea alcon) because of its complex life cycle and its rate of decline. A survey was carried out to determine the present state of the habitats. It was found that in Flanders only 12 populations of the Alcon Blue still occur in 9 areas with sufficient food plants and host ants. This alarming fact has led to an official conservation plan for the butterfly species involving governmental bodies and nature conservationists. Now it is their task to see that implementation of the plan leads to improved habitats arid restored butterfly populations.
