The First Indian Symposium of Odonatology was held in the School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, during January 23-25, 1984. About 30 papers were presented and some 45 scientists actively participated in the Symposium. On January 23, Professor J. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor of the Madurai Kamaraj University, inaugurated the meeting. Papers presented pertain to taxonomy, cytotaxonomy, population dynamics, endocrinology, physiology, reproductive biology and toxicology. Plenary talks on selected topics were presented by Prof. T.N. Ananthakrishnan, Dr B.K. Tyagi, Dr D.B. Tembhare and Prof. T.J. Pandian. The participants were taken to a field trip in the Alagar Hills, some 30 km from the University Campus. The Symposium was financially supported by the International Society of Odonatology, Madurai Kamaraj University, and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. A very nicely produced booklet of the abstracts can be ordered from the SIO National Office in India (c/o Dr B.K.
