During the last decade the records of H. ephippiger are being reported from an increasing number of localities in western and in eastern Europe. It seems, the species tends to move northwards, and several cases of breeding were also brought on record. For a fairly exhaustive literature review see R, BERNARD & J. MUSIAL (1995, Opuse, zool. flumin. 138: 1-9). A breeding habitat from the Ukraine has been described by S. GORB (1992, Acta hydroent. latv. 2: 18-21). On 30 May 1995, I have sighted 2 territorial males, at a temporary pond near the town of Jagotin, 104 km E of Kiev. On I June, a tandem was seen sitting in the vegetation, some 30 m off the bank. The aquatic vegetation of the locality mainly consists of Bolbochoenus compactus, Alisma plantago-aquatica, Butomus umbellatus, Ceratophyllum demersum, Potamogeton sp. and Batrachium sp. At the time of sighting, 9 other dragonfly species were also at the pond, viz. Coenagrion puella, C. pulchellum, Erythromma najas, Ischnura elegans. Anaciaeschna isosceles, Anax imperator, Libellula quadrimaculata, Orthetrum albistylum and O. cancellatum. The subsequent systematic search (20 June – 15 August) for the second generation was not successful. In late August the pond was destroyed.
