In 2012, in five municipalities in the province Groningen, altogether some 361 km², 27 territories of Sparrowhawks were found, with another 6 territories elsewhere in the province. The birds were breeding in woodlots, but also in parks, small plantations along highways, on a cemetery and in a tree nursery. Of 31 nests found, 10 were in coniferous trees, the rest in a variety of deciduous trees. Fifteen out of 25 pairs were successful in raising at least one fledgling. Predation and partial predation were often recorded. In seven nests where young were ringed, the number of nestlings was 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (on average 3.1/successful nest). Louse flies were found in a single nest.
