Komt Gittenbergia sororcula in Nederland of België voor? Met een verzoek om soorten uit kassen en kwekerijen op te nemen in de lijst van in Nederland en België voorkomende weekdieren

A shipment of Sempervivum (Houseleek), supposed to come from a nursery in the Netherlands and intercepted in Israel, contained among others a single specimen of the minute landsnail Gittenbergia sororcula (Benoit, 1859). A follow up research revealed that the plants were grown in Belgium. This species of Mediterranean origin has not been reported before either from the Netherlands or Belgium, which might be partly due to the fact that landsnails found only in hothouses and nurseries have so far not been considered to form part of the Dutch and Belgian malacofauna. It is recommended to include such exotic species, which in fact may be widely distributed in artificial habitats and may be of economic importance as a horticultural pest (for example Zonitoides arboreus), in any future reviews of the terrestrial mollusc fauna of the Netherlands and Belgium.
