Previously all mussel species from the Dutch coast have been identified as Mytilus edulis. Over the past few years M. galloprovincialis has been added, but here also recent material of M. trossulus is reported. These three species are also known as fossils from the Dutch beaches, together with a fourth species, M. antiquorum.
