Dr. Frederik Petrus Koumans died on April 27, 1977. He was born in The Hague on April 21, 1905. He obtained his Ph.D. as a biologist at the University of Leiden and in 1928 joined the staff of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden as curator of fishes. In 1947 he was appointed librarian of the Municipal hospitals of The Hague, where he constructed a unique documentary system to retrieve medical information. Koumans was a foundation member of the Dutch malacological society in 1934 and its first secretary until 1942. From 1936 to 1944 he was co-editor of Basteria and librarian of the society.
