Hendrikus Eduard Coomans was born in Amsterdam on June 9, 1929. He studied biology and obtained his PhD in 1974 on a biohistorical malacological subject related to the Netherlands Antilles. He worked for some time on Curaçao and later in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In 1965 he became curator of the department of Malacology of the Zoölogisch MuseumAmsterdam. He studied and published on molluscs from the West Indies and the family Conidae. In 1994 he retired and from then on he spent most of his time and knowledge on publishing books mainly related to the Netherlands Antilles. He passed away on October 13, 2010. His malacological publications published since 1994 and a list of the new malacological taxa he (co-)authored are listed.
