Most, but not all, European Triphoridae described by Bouchet (1978; 1984) can be identified with the help of a simple stereomicroscope (40x), inspite of the fact that for a complete identification of all species SEM photographs of the protoconch and the study of the animals are required. The characters of the last teleoconchwhorl are the main key facts in these identifications. Unfortunately, it is impossible to separate the shells of the very common species with the most extensive range of distribution in this area, Marshallora adversa, from Similiphora similior or from the rare Monophorus thiriotae. Therefore almost 90% of the collected empty shells can be identified only as c.f. Marshallora adversa.
