Was. Pseudunio auricularius (Spengler, 1793) still living in England quite recently? A reidentification of three pearlmussels from the river Wye, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, present in the former collections of Arthur Blok and Giorgio S. Coen and now in the National Mollusc Collection of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, revealed that two specimens belong to Margaritifera margaritifera and one to Pseudunio auricularius. The exterior form, colour and corrosion of the umbonal area is exactly the same in all three shells. However, the interior of Pseudunio auricularius differs from that of Margaritifera margaritifera by the presence of well developed lateral and the extremely heavy cardinal teeth. The question now arises whether this species has been overlooked so far or has Coen’s shell been mixed up with foreign material before it arrived in Venice? A recheck of pearlmussels from the river Wye present in old collections may solve this problem.
