On 17 and 19 February 2016 (in late afternoon), in the vole-riddled polder De Kroon near Werkendam, Kestrels attempted to rob a Short-eared Owl of its prey, two out of five times successfully. The successful attacks were always aerial, and from below. An attempt to rob a sitting owl of its prey failed as the owl started to mantle and refused to budge. Another aerial chase involved a Kestrel and a sudadult male Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus simultaneously harassing a prey-carrying Short-eared Owl; the owl dropped its prey which was retrieved in the air by the harrier. On the website Waarneming.nl six other records of Kestrels trying to rob Short eared Owls were found (and one vice versa).
