In March 2016, the author and four other Dutch birdwatchers visited Suriname. They were among the first who used the new 'Field guide to the birds of Suriname' (Spaans et al. 2016). Suriname is an ideal destination to become familiair with the birds of South America. The new field guide shows 53 raptor species, of which we observed 26 species in less than two weeks time. The observation of a Pearl Kite Gampsonyx swainsonii on March 16 at the road to Hannover was presumably the first March-observation for Surinam.
