Vendace suddenly appears in the Netherlands Until recently vendace (Coregonus albula) was considered non-present in the Netherlands. In a short period of time between November 2015 and March 2016 five vendace were caught in the river IJssel and the Wadden Sea. Human mediated introduction is considered the most likely origin of these individuals. They could have escaped from stocked populations in German lakes upstream in the Rhine, or accidentally introduced otherwise. As a non-native species vendace poses a potential threat to native species, although the risk of establishment is considered to be low.
