Overal waar water is, is vis? Het voorkomen van vissoorten in Hollandse duinwateren

ish species in dune waters along the West coast of The Netherlands Isolated and relatively small lakes, such as dune lakes, are by nature not very rich in species. To gain an insight into the fish species found in dune waters along the West coast of The Netherlands, we used fish data collected by water managers and volunteers over the period 2000-2017. The dune waters appear to be richer than expected. A total of 23 different species were identified, including most of the eurytopic and limnophilic species in the Netherlands. Also the number of exotic fish species was relatively high. Rheophilic species were rarely found. One explanation is that eggs and larvae of fish species are transported in the past with the water pumped from rivers and canals into the dunes for infiltration. Nowadays, the use of filters make this no longer possible. The presence of exotic species can be explained by the fact that the dune lakes are in urban areas, where these species are likely to be released. Als visecoloog meen ik te weten dat het aantal vissoorten van nature afneemt al naar gelang wateren meer geïsoleerd en kleiner zijn. Voor de Hollandse duinwateren was mijn verwachting dan ook, dat deze door hun geïsoleerde ligging arm zouden zijn aan vis. Dat blijkt echter niet overal het geval: in totaal werden er 23 verschillende vissoorten waargenomen. Dit artikel gaat in op de zeldzaamheid, de ecologische groepen waartoe ze behoren en de vermoedelijke herkomst van deze soorten.
