Fishing workgroup De Prik celebrates 25 years In 1992 a small group of fish enthusiasts founded ‘Viswerkgroep De Prik’, a volunteer working group of which the name refers to the brook lamprey. They started monitoring rheophilic fish species in the numerous small streams of the central Dutch Veluwe area. The goal was to create awareness of these species and their habitats in order to protect them. An important aspect of this effort was to stress the importance of these habitats and associated species to, at the time, the rather ‘conservative’ water manager who was mainly focused on agricultural interests. Over time, the working group has uncovered a great deal of knowledge and had an impact on management decisions regarding stream restoration. To date the working group is still creative, proactive, diverse and very much thriving. This year the group celebrates its 25th anniversary. Due to their important work RAVON granted them €1,500 to facilitate and stimulate the continuation of their work in this field.
