From 2018 on, the locks in the Haringvliet dam will also be opened at high tide: migration opportunities for diadromous fish species In 1971 the Haringvliet dam was constructed, which closed off an important part of the estuary of the Rhine and Meuse. This strongly obstructed fish migration and the brackish fish community disappeared. The fish stock on the freshwater side of the Haringvliet dam is currently dominated by Roach, Bream, Perch and Zander. The locks in the dam only open at low tide and river water flows into the sea at speeds that are too high for most fishes. From 2018 on, the locks in the dam will also be opened at high tide with the main objective of restoring fish migration possibilities between the North Sea and the rivers Rhine and Meuse. This will significantly improve migration opportunities for diadromous fish species. Species such as Atlantic salmon, River lamprey, Sea lamprey, Smelt, Twaite shad, Allis shad, Houting, and Eel will benefit from this. In the brackish water zone that arises upstream of the locks, an increase is expected of marine species that are tolerant of lower salt levels. The construction of the Haringvliet dam and the other Delta Worksled to the largely disappearance of the tidal dynamics in the Dutch Lower Rivers. Although the possibilities for diadromous fish species will improve considerably, estuarine dynamics is only permitted to a small extent and therefore remains very limited compared to the historical situation. For species that are heavily dependent on a brackish water tidal zone, it is therefore questionable whether the new lock management will benefit in their recovery in a significant way.
