Eagle Owls have been breeding in the quarry of Maastricht for some years. The same quarry became the home of a Peregrine pair in 2015. The clutch of 4 eggs resulted in 3 chicks, but the brood was not successful. Also in 2016, no fledglings were recorded. As predation by Eagle Owls was suspected, an artificial nest with better observation possibilities was provided in 2017. Three chicks were ringed when 22-24 days old, but a week later only the remains of one of the depredated chicks were found. Evidence suggests that indeed Eagle Owl predation was the cause of failure; the distance between the nests of Eagle Owl and Peregrine was only 400-500 m.
